Preamble

The Privacy Act 1988 (Privacy Act) is an Australian law which regulates the handling of personal information.

The Privacy Act includes thirteen Australian Privacy Principles (APPs). The APPs set out standards, rights and obligations for the handling, holding, use, accessing and correction of personal information (including sensitive information).

Australian Government agencies (and the Norfolk Island administration) and all businesses and not-for-profit organisations with an annual turnover more than $3 million have responsibilities under the Privacy Act, subject to some exceptions. ASMR does not fall within this jurisdiction but is committed to all due diligence in respect of members privacy.

Policy

The Australian Society for Medical Research (ASMR) collects information from you when you register as a member, register for an event or apply for an award.

You may be asked to enter your: name, email address, mailing address, phone number or credit card information, date of birth, federal electorate or home postcode and career details.  You may be asked if you will assist ASMR by accepting promotional mailings.

The information provided will be used to service your needs as a member of the Society and to further the public, political and scientific goals of the ASMR, to process transactions and to facilitate mail or email contact.

Some information may be accessed by trusted third parties in the operation of our website or servicing you, where those parties agree to keep this information confidential.

ASMR and its third party contractors employ a variety of security measures to safeguard your information.

ASMR maintains a public Member Directory. Members appearing in the directory must authorise and request ASMR to list their professional addressing details, including telephone, fax and email, together with Degrees achieved, other society memberships, worldwide web address and four key words/phrases reflecting research interests included in the publicly available ASMR Membership Directory.  Members may opt out of the public Member Directory at any time.
